Notes for Vietnamese speakers
- Trong tiếng Việt, 'used to' (quá khứ) thường được dịch là 'đã từng', trong khi 'be used to' được dịch là 'quen với'.
- Người Việt thường hay nhầm lẫn 'used to' với 'usually' vì cả hai đều liên quan đến thói quen, nhưng 'used to' chỉ dùng cho quá khứ.
- Cấu trúc 'get used to' rất hữu ích khi nói về việc thích nghi với đồ ăn cay hoặc thời tiết nồm ẩm tại Việt Nam.
Etymology
Derived from the verb 'use' (from Old French 'user' and Latin 'usare'), which originally meant to practice or be accustomed to. The phonetic shift from /juːzd/ to /juːst/ occurred as 'to' followed the word, causing the 'd' to devoice. The habituative sense developed in Middle English (14th century).
